Many decendants of the early residents of Calaveras County are still living, and it is possible to collect from them a vast fund of early history in the county.

Each spring, the Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve comes alive with the seasonal surprises of the Mojave Desert Grassland habitat. The duration and intensity of colors and scents vary from year to year. The wildflower season generally lasts from as early as mid-February through May, with a variety of wildflowers creating a mosaic of color that changes daily.

Park, Zoo

No longer able to survive in their normal habitat, these ambassadors from the wild need care and protection. In return they provide zoo visitors with a glimpse of the wonders of nature. Professional Zoo Keepers (Donna McDowell and Alisha Costa) provide daily care and management of the animals. Individuals are welcome to enroll in the volunteer program to assist with exhibit cleaning, diet preparation, landscaping maintenance and zoo improvement projects. Volunteers must be at least 16 years of age and may sign up at the Parks and Community Services Office located at 690 West 16th Street in Merced.

Benicia Capitol State Historic Park is the site of California’s third seat of government (1853-54). It is the only pre-Sacramento Capitol that survives. The original building has been restored with reconstructed period furnishings and exhibits. The interior includes a board-for-board reconstruction of the building’s original floor with ponderosa pine. The desks, three of which are originals from the Benicia period or earlier, are furnished with a candlestick, a 19th century newspaper, a quill pen and a top hat.

Bidwell Mansion State Historic Park showcases the life and home of CA pioneer, farmer and statesman, John Bidwell. The park includes his restored and fully-furnished 26-room Victorian mansion, as well as a modern Visitor Center which houses an Exhibit Hall and a Museum Store.
