Benjamin Caryl House

Dover, Massachusetts

Culture, History, Historic House, Historical Society, Park

Built in the Georgian style, the Benjamin Caryl House served as home to the Caryl family until 1928, when it was given to the town and placed under the care and maintenance of the Dover Historical Society. It is particularly noteworthy as a structure - as very few changes were made over the years - and for its first two families, the town's first minister and his son, George, the first doctor.

The Town of Dover began as the Fourth Precinct of Dedham, Springfield Parish, in 1748. It was separated as the District of Dover in 1784 and became the Town of Dover in 1836. The history of Dover can still be seen in buildings and sites existing today. The first Meetinghouse was raised in 1754 and its first minister, the Reverend Benjamin Caryl, accepted the call in 1762, serving for fifty years. At this time, there were 352 inhabitants and 49 houses in Dover.

Our museum is housed in the historic Abbotsford Mansion built circa. l870. It is set on a magnificent and spacious green amid ancient Oak and Corkwood trees. Eternal Presence by John Wilson, a monumental bronze head rises on a nearby knoll adjacent to an outcropping of Puddingstone boulders, the rocks for which Roxbury is named. Abbotsford, originally named Oak Bend, is the best example of Victorian High Gothic domestic architecture in Boston and is on the National Historic Register.

It's as if each piece in the collection has a secret. Each piece held special meaning to its owner who's wish it was to be donated to the Milton Art Museum. Items came from local families and collectors who believed art was to shared and supported. From homes, through travels, and via private collections, the museum proudly exhibits over 270 objects of Asian and Western origin. This is the spirit in which the museum was founded.
Our vision is to maintain the mission of the Milton Art Museum which is to exist as a local cultural center to exhibit art objects for the enjoyment of adults and children.

2025 American Alliance of Museums (AAM) ANNUAL MEETING & MUSEUMEXPO

Los Angeles Convention Center

Los Angeles, California

AAM 2025 will focus on the theme, Museums & Trust.

Museums have long inspired high levels of public trust, surpassing news outlets, government organizations, researchers and scientists, corporations, and social media platforms. This consistent finding underscores our institutions’ unique position in society as stewards of knowledge, culture, science, and history—areas where credibility and reliability are paramount

In an era marked by mistrust and misinformation, museums have a rare ability to counterbalance the proliferation of false narratives and polarized perspectives. Using our trusted position, we can cultivate a more healthy, empathetic, and informed society.

But to do so, we must maintain our credibility proactively, embracing thoughtful, transparent, and collaborative practices that will defend against influences like bias, resource challenges, abuse of power, and social injustice

An Incredible MuseumExpo

AAM is again partnering this year with the Museum Store Association to host an incredible combined expo hall. Find the most innovative services, products, and solutions in the museum field. With 350 exhibitors, you are bound to find the right partner for your museum’s current challenges and opportunities.

2025 Am Assoc for State and Local History Annual Conference

TBD

Cincinnati, Ohio

The 2025 AASLH Annual Conference, in partnership with Ohio Local History Alliance, will take place as the history field makes the final preparations to kickoff off the 250th commemoration of the founding of the United States.

The 2025 conference theme, inspired by AASLH’s Making History at 250: The Field Guide for Semiquincentennial, is an opportunity to broadly explore one of the guide’s themes, The American Experiment. For many in the American colonies in 1776, independence from Britain represented a “leap into the dark” into an unknown future

We are excited for you to join us in Cincinnati as we encourage discussion about our democracy and civic institutions and how they can help strengthen understanding, inspire action, and reveal ways that all of us can participate in and shape the ongoing American experiment.

For more information, please call 615-320-3203 or email info@aaslh.org.
