The ANSC is situated on an eighty acre preserve containing woodlands (80%), and a meadow area (20%). Rather than being stored in cabinets, all of these collections contribute toward fulfilling our mission, of providing hands-on educational experiences in our interactive programs, exhibits and nature trails, as mandated by our Statement of Purpose.

One of Austin's most important historic houses, the Neill-Cochran House was built in 1855 by the Master Builder Abner Cook, who also designed the Texas Governor's Mansion, both in the Greek Revival style. The House served as the first Asylum for the Blind in Texas and was a hospital, under the command of General George Armstrong Custer, for the Union Army during Reconstruction. It was not owner-occupied until 1876 when Colonel Andew Neill purchased it for his family. Judge Thomas Cochran bought the House from Col. Neill's widow in 1895, and it remained in the Cochran family until 1958, when it was sold to the NSCDA, who preserved it and opened it to the public in 1962.

In keeping with our storyline, we are attempting to tell the history of the Military Forces of Texas. At this time, we begin in 1835 and go to the present time, but somday, we must tell the story of the local militias when Spain and Mexico ruled Texas. My vision is for our museum to become the focal point in our state for the portrayal, the research and the study and the propagation throughout Texas and the United States of the history and traditions of the Texas Military Forces. Among our major projects is the completion of our research library and the renovation of a large room to be used for meetings, conferences, historical presentations by noted military historians, and for training in history and traditions for members of the State Military Forces.

Wild Basin is a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting an endangered habitat and encouraging wise stewardship through education. In addition to the display of our natural collections, we hope to develop interpretive displays inside our building and along out trails. Our educational programs will also expand to privide more specialized information for visitors, school groups, and teachers. The barriers are financial and time to create these. Resource Sharing Projects make it possible for the whole to become greater than the individuals. Many of us have differend audiences who never go to other facilities but would benefit from materials that are displayed or provided at the other museums.

2025 American Alliance of Museums (AAM) ANNUAL MEETING & MUSEUMEXPO

Los Angeles Convention Center

Los Angeles, California

AAM 2025 will focus on the theme, Museums & Trust.

Museums have long inspired high levels of public trust, surpassing news outlets, government organizations, researchers and scientists, corporations, and social media platforms. This consistent finding underscores our institutions’ unique position in society as stewards of knowledge, culture, science, and history—areas where credibility and reliability are paramount

In an era marked by mistrust and misinformation, museums have a rare ability to counterbalance the proliferation of false narratives and polarized perspectives. Using our trusted position, we can cultivate a more healthy, empathetic, and informed society.

But to do so, we must maintain our credibility proactively, embracing thoughtful, transparent, and collaborative practices that will defend against influences like bias, resource challenges, abuse of power, and social injustice

An Incredible MuseumExpo

AAM is again partnering this year with the Museum Store Association to host an incredible combined expo hall. Find the most innovative services, products, and solutions in the museum field. 2025 Am Assoc for State and Local History Annual Conference

TBD

Cincinnati, Ohio

The 2025 AASLH Annual Conference, in partnership with Ohio Local History Alliance, will take place as the history field makes the final preparations to kickoff off the 250th commemoration of the founding of the United States.

The 2025 conference theme, inspired by AASLH’s Making History at 250: The Field Guide for Semiquincentennial, is an opportunity to broadly explore one of the guide’s themes, The American Experiment. For many in the American colonies in 1776, independence from Britain represented a “leap into the dark” into an unknown future

We are excited for you to join us in Cincinnati as we encourage discussion about our democracy and civic institutions and how they can help strengthen understanding, inspire action, and reveal ways that all of us can participate in and shape the ongoing American experiment.

For more information, please call 615-320-3203 or email info@aaslh.org.
